early memories of nuclear war

So earliest memories...It was 40 years ago this month and apparently we didn't have a basement in the house we were living in at the time, because we hauled off and went to visit some friends of my parents, who did have a basement, where we could wait and see if nuclear war was about to start. If the world had ended, I have to wonder just how long the friends would have put up with another whole family living in their frickin' basement. Probably not by coincidence, when I was older and started reading science fiction, "Foster, You're Dead," by Philip K. Dick became my favorite Christmas story of all time.
