hooray for baby mockingbirds -- and, finally, a trio of swallowtail kites
2011-07-02 - 8:35 a.m.
I had my stones from the vibratory tumbler experiment sitting
in white vinegar and water. I felt no hurry to get to them, because
I didn't think they were finished. However, I started cleaning them
Friday, and I've already found a number of stones with a nice polish.
So far, I've pulled 70 finished stones. Some of them are just finished, as in,
the polish found sufficent fractures in the material that it isn't
worth working any longer; but, many of them are actually very nice.
Maybe I'll finish the cleaning and sorting today, so I can take some
photographs.
Trimmed and cleaned the tiles for the birdbath mosaic. Shaped some
more Chevron Amethyst and Green Aventurine for future tumbling runs.
Lots of action in the backyard Thursday evening: -
Baby Northern Mockingbirds on the fence, flying
shakily down to the tomato plants and then back up to the fence, pausing to flare
their cupped wings, as they learn both to fly and to flash those
white wing patches.
So cute.
-
More baby Northern Cardinals along the same fence.
-
Adult Red-Headed Woodpeckers constantly coming and going from
the feeder. They are picking out more than peanuts. I think
they are taking all the pellets and monkey biscuit too, leaving
nothing but seed. But they're worth it.
-
Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds, juveniles or females,
at the Trumpet Honeycreeper flowers.
All in all, a nice crop of youngsters this year.
9:30 A.M.
As I was washing out the rotary tumbling barrels, three Swallow-Tailed Kites flew over, one of them sorta singing in that squeaky way they have. Finally. I thought the yard was going to get skunked this year by the Swallow-Tails.
