big bend national park birding list for the lazy
2006-11-13 - 12:24 p.m.
OK, here's my bird list from Big Bend National Park and the immediate area of
Marathon, Texas. It isn't a huge list. Partly it's the time of year. Even the
Turkey Vultures have departed. However, a lot of it is because the purpose of the trip
was to meet with the folks at Eve's Garden and learn about their story and the story of
papercrete. Since it's a B&B, this meant showing up for breakfast, instead of rushing out at
4 A.M. to get in position to get the smaller birds or the owls. A trip dedicated to
birding
is guaranteed to get more species. But even if you sleep late, you can rely on
the Red-Tailed Hawks and the Greater Roadrunners to put on a show.
-
Pied-billed Grebe
-
Double-crested Cormorant
-
Northern Harrier
-
Cooper's Hawk
-
Zone-tailed Hawk--2
-
Red-tailed Hawk--many, many, many
-
American Kestrel
-
Wild Turkey
-
American Coot
-
Eurasian Collared-Dove
-
White-winged Dove
-
Greater Roadrunner--an easy bird to observe in this park
-
Vermilion Flycatcher--a fine male
-
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
-
Cactus Wren
-
Chihuahuan Raven
-
Common Raven
-
European Starling
-
Canyon Towhee
-
Brewer's Blackbird
-
Brown-headed Cowbird
-
House Finch
-
House Sparrow
Other easily seen wildlife:
- Soft-shelled Turtles
- Mule Deer--watch out!
- Jackrabbit
- Oodles of butterflies of oodles of species, including our good friend the
Buckeye and some sort of western Fritillary -- even though it was November, on sunny
days where there are flowers or hilltopping opportunities, expect to see them feeding,
flirting, occasionally getting more serious than just flirting, and even mud puddling.
Really, you should bring a good butterfly book such as Kaufmann's to the Big Bend area. My greatest regret was leaving it at home.
2004 by elaine radford and roger williamsok, this buckeye was actually photographed at mizzell's in folsom, louisiana, but we saw no shortage of them in the big bend area, we just didn't have time to work on photographing them again
Come back soon. I'll be posting my trip photographs. Don't expect Ansel Adams, because I'm still practicing with the little Canon Elph, but I'll have enough to give a tiny hint of what you could do.
