By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

the classic -- common buckeye

We returned for another look at the Butterfly Extravaganza this morning. Along the way, we saw 14 brown White Ibis alongside the highway, 11 in Mandeville, and the other three in Covington.

The horde of fighting, feeding, squeaking, and scuffling female Ruby-Throat Hummingbirds continues. A nice hummingbird moth also put in an appearance.

Dr. Gary Noel Ross led a sort of Sunday morning revival meeting on the subject of butterflies. An unnamed billionaire is funding a nine figure butterfly center in Florida, so Dr. Ross will be moving out of Louisiana soon to follow this unique opportunity.

At this time, Louisiana is the only state with not one but two Butterfly Festivals, and I suppose Florida would like to get caught up. Dr. Ross said last year's one hour butterfly count during the Butterfly Fest produced 600 butterflies belonging to 26 species.

There were lots of unidentifieds, mostly skippers, but we feel we have a pretty respectable list:

  1. Eastern Tiger Swallowtail -- both female morphs and a male
  2. Pipevine Swallowtail
  3. Giant Swallowtail
  4. Orange Sulphur
  5. Sleepy Orange
  6. Little Yellow
  7. Cloudless Sulphur
  8. Gulf Fritillary
  9. Pearl Crescent
  10. Painted Lady
  11. Common Buckeye
  12. Monarch
  13. Carolina Satyr
  14. Long-Tailed Skipper
  15. Silver-Spotted Skipper
  16. Tropical Checkered-Skipper
with its space alien green body and long showy tail, the long-tailed skipper
is a break from those tough to identify jet plane skipper species

Yesterday, in addition to the Black Swallowtails, Dr. Ross said that they had some Palamedes Swallowtails in the afternoon; alas, we missed them. Maybe next year.
