What an odd discovery for a fine Saturday evening, and it could only mean one thing. I opened the lid to discover that they had drilled a hole through the bottom of the nestbox and were in the process of creating their own exit. Oh, and by the way, Dale had also dropped off another egg. I removed the egg, and the two of them stared, aghast, at the entrance to the nestbox. I felt like Dr. Evil the Red-Headed Woodpecker himself. But it gets worse. This morning DH cut out a nice thick new wooden bottom and dropped it into the nestbox. You never saw two birds more horrified. They have been sitting at the entrance hole and peering in at this "improvement" all day. And they are most certainly not amused. She looks great, and the fancy SUV complete with smoked glass windows and leather seats looks great too. Who would ever believe that it traveled cross country with nine, count 'em, nine dogs? I am now a believer in the power of canine Prozac. I weeded and mulched the rest of the pepper plants. In fact, for lunch, we had a chicken salad with garden lettuce and two kinds of chopped fresh pepper. It's going to freeze at the Grand Canyon and there will be a pool at the Rio. I've spent half the day trying on various costume changes and trying to pack my bags. I wonder what I'm forgetting. I never should have doubted the testosterone level of my male mockingbird. He has been performing impressively all day, not just in the variety of songs but in decibel level too. Once he flew right up to me near the fence and started singing, and I was a little fearful for my eardrums. Go, Mr. Mockingbird! Oh, and I noticed this afternoon that our "economic stimulus" had finally appeared in our bank account. It will be wisely spent on puffin and whale-watching tours. Saturday's Drink of the Day: 4 ounce red wine.
