2003-06-29 - 1:23 p.m. Hummingbird Report: Huge amounts of hummingbird activity. All immatures from what I've seen. Maybe the same immature over and over. Both feeders, honeycreeper flowers, and cardinal climber flowers are being heavily used. Pretty much constant action. If I think there are no hummers around, all I have to do is wait a few minutes. As I write, there is a hummer sitting in the pine tree, guarding his territory. First he went around, tried both feeders, the cardinal climber, and even a couple of echinacea flowers. I accidentally put my hands in a fire ant nest while I was weeding today and came away covered with stinging ants. Fortunately, I got to the white vinegar in time and poured it all over the bites. A couple of bites turned red for a few minutes but I just looked down and realized that they had completely vanished. They say that vinegar neutralizes formic acid, the stinging chemical in ant bites. I'm always amazed and impressed at how well it works. BF pulled the old bench seat out of the van. It converts into a cot for one person -- one small person -- which is not particularly useful, since when it is just one small person, I would be more likely to save the gas and go the Toyota plus tent route. Without the bench seat in back, we have lots more room to work with. More hummer report: About two minutes after I posted, two immature hummers -- one definitely starting to get a couple of gorget feathers -- started fighting over the perch on the pine tree. They were both quite determined and kept scuffling for longer than I expected. I wonder how many young hummers are actually back there and where the nest (or nests) was (were) hidden. after dinner It started to rain, and I saw where two hummers were sitting -- one in the pine tree, the other on the telephone wire where the bird was bathing in the rain. Then it started to rain harder, and both birds took off for the heavy cover in the CLECO right-of-way behind the fence.
