my fracking rant of the day, don't read it 2014-07-23 - 9:47 a.m. Have to admit I can't quite get with the anti-fracking bandwagon. I didn't even sign the petition against the rig in my own parish so probably not gonna sign anyone else's. There are issues, mainly the wastewaster disposal issues and the fact that injection wells to dispose of the wastewater are a very well known cause of earthquakes. But this issue strikes me as a technical waste disposal issue that isn't impossible to fix. By contrast, there is no way to make nuclear waste not be radioactive. That's physics 101. And the cost of nuclear accidents in Japan and the Ukraine should be enough to persuade anybody that this technology isn't economic and can't be made economic. So what's the alternative? It's coal, which also carries a huge cost in lives, dollars, and landscapes. There are too many people, and we can't ask them to continue living in the stone age without energy. People are going to continue to demand a better life and, really, why shouldn't they? Besides, I don't think we should just automatically shit on an entire industry just because it's one where the United States is a leader. It's OK to acknowledge that we have smart people here and we occasionally create something that works. I keep getting the irksome impression that many fracking opponents are against any new technology whatsoever, just because it's new and it's easy to see the downside because nothing's ever perfect. I can't claim to be highly invested in this opinion. It's one where I feel like I could easily change my mind if I had more information. But hey. This is a diary.
