By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

A bibliography of my published books and stories.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

A Sadean take on Asimov's classic Three Laws of Robotics can be found in Roger Williams' NOW REVIEWED ON SLASHDOT!!! The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect. free purple haze is a good thing

2003-09-19 - 4:39 p.m.

Hummingbird Report: Still a very active migration season. Adult female Ruby-Throats scuffling, feeding, or guarding the feeder pretty much every time I checked on the situation. A banded female is sitting watch over the rear feeder at the moment.

They have already confirmed 17 deaths caused by Hurricane/Tropical Storm Isabel, and hundreds of thousands if not millions of people appear to be without power. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is said to have received its first Tropical Storm warning in human history. Washington D.C. has been shut down for two days. I hope that's it for tropical storms this year, but that's probably unrealistic.

I stopped by the Business Expo. There were fewer booths and fewer freebies than last year, but I grazed a decent lunch that somehow included two different Bananas Foster recipes. I also got a small sample of the new Abita light (excellent) and a large cup of the Purple Haze. Then I went against my better judgment and sampled the new Vanilla Pepsi. With the alcohol and caffeine fighting it out, I took a short walk on the nature trail. It was the wrong time of day for much bird action, so the list is super short:

  1. Great Egret
  2. Snowy Egret/Little Blue Heron -- the bright white bird was retreating and at that awkward yellow-green legged stage where it is difficult to tell them apart
  3. Hummingbird species -- almost certainly a Ruby-Throat but it was high up and made its escape before I could get the binoculars on it
  4. Carolina Chickadee
  5. Northern Cardinal

There was some good butterfly movement, since it was the middle of the day:

  1. Gulf Fritillaries -- lots
  2. Cloudless Sulphurs -- several
  3. Carolina Satyr -- saw it up close but not 100 percent confident of the ID on this one
  4. Buckeyes -- a few, a personal favorite

I got my book on the birds of Kenya today.

later

There are now 23 confirmed dead in Isabel.

A flock of Blue Jays is raising hell in the back yard for no immediately discernable reason.
