Today The New Yorker posted an article by Seymour Hersh, called, "The Cold Test: What the Administration knew about Pakistan and the North Korean nuclear program." In this article, he states that the Bush administration has known for some months that Pakistan has been supplying North Korean with nuclear material and expertise:
"Last June, four months before the current crisis over North Korea became public, the Central Intelligence Agency delivered a comprehensive analysis of North Korea's nuclear ambitions to President Bush and his top advisers....
The C.I.A. report made the case that North Korea had been violating international law�and agreements with South Korea and the United States�by secretly obtaining the means to produce weapons-grade uranium.
The document's most politically sensitive information, however, was about Pakistan. Since 1997, the C.I.A. said, Pakistan had been sharing sophisticated technology, warhead-design information, and weapons-testing data with the Pyongyang regime. Pakistan, one of the Bush Administration's important allies (sic) in the war against terrorism, was helping North Korea build the bomb."
The article claims that the original CIA document was classified as "Top Secret," which I guess is not very secret, since these facts have been widely discussed on the internet for quite some time.
At this rate, the average American voter will learn about Pakistan's nefarious activities around the time the first airburst goes off overhead.
No doubt it's awfully old-fashioned of me, but I think when a government is passing out nuclear secrets like candy to homicidal dictator and crazed fanatic alike, while providing a secure hiding place for any number of crazed fanatics that have already planned and executed an attack on American civilians on American soil, we are excused from referring to said government as an "ally," no matter whose feelings might be hurt in the process.
