Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

random garden notes

2003-04-05 - 9:52 a.m.

BF is feeling much better today, so I think we can assume that he didn't have Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

Random garden notes:

  • I took another quick peek, and I'm pretty sure that I have three baby Carolina Chickadees.

  • Two pairs of Northern Cardinals are fighting over the yard.

  • I staked some of the asparagus and discovered that they were four feet high, maybe higher in some cases, with tiny greeny-white bells for flowers.

  • I've been getting lettuce for salads and sandwiches from the garden almost every day for three weeks or so. Today, I'll be having some nice fresh asparagus tips on top of the salad.

  • Spiderworts are going strong, with lots of bloom around the yard in the morning, but closing up like tight little fists if it gets too warm in the afternoon.

  • I believe that my White-Throated Sparrows have departed for their breeding grounds -- haven't heard or seen them for a couple of days.

  • Whoo hoo! Just as I was typing this list, a female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird stopped by. Perhaps a wave of females is due to migrate through.

  • The shallots are starting to bloom.

  • The "burnt" leaves fell off the Basil plants, but new leaves are growing back, so we seem to have survived that hurdle. The other herbs are looking terrific.

Getcher story straight: Jessica Lynch's doctor announced this morning that, oops, he found some bullet holes in his patient after all. I think the Mayberry Machiavellis would do better to just cut their losses on this pack of lies. I am fairly sure that there is a West Virginia, and there may even be a Jessica Lynch, but that is about as far as it goes. One of life's lessons -- if you weren't there, you don't really know what happened. In any case, the TV Movie of the Week negotiations are back on track, and it sounds like the Lynch family needs the money, so there it stands.

later

We had a torrential thunderstorm, but the Chickadees kept on working, wet feathers and all.

I just read the log of BF's chat last night, and it seemed to go very well. Lots of ideas being tossed around.
