2003-08-12 - 9:46 a.m. The banana tree that was smashed by the crane has quickly sprung back to life. I just put it in the last unsmashed large pot. The Latino crew returned this morning and measured the living room again. They should be returning in a little while to do the shoe molding. I am still pondering the mystery of lightning bugs. When I was a child in the Carolinas -- I don't remember any lightning bugs from Virginia, perhaps because I was too young -- then lightning bugs were white/yellow. Sort of light bulb colored. Then, in my very early twenties, I went camping in Arkansas in an extremely dark spot, and I suddenly saw that there were red and green lightning bugs. For a moment, I thought I was hallucinating. But my companion saw them too. In later years, at least once, when I was sitting in the hot tub, back when I still had a hot tub and soaked every night, I also saw red and green guys in my own backyard. But the lightning bug I saw last night was the white/yellow light bulb colored kind. It seems likely that there are many species of lightning bugs. But who knows? Children are not terribly good observers. The eye, like the palate, has to be trained. Perhaps there were zillions of red or green lightning bugs among the white/yellow ones that we used to trap in glass jars to make our lightning bug lanterns. Perhaps they were all lightly tinted red or green, and I just didn't notice. Or, perhaps, the red and green ones are only found in certain locations. Or, and I am leaning somewhat toward this theory at the moment, perhaps you can only see the colors of lightning bugs when there is true darkness -- a moonless night and a minimum of light pollution. around 11:30 A.M. The Latino crew finished the shoe molding. Now all we need is to get the flooring guy to fit us into his schedule so that he can put down the transitions. I am so close to having a living room again that I can almost taste it. I have now put all the recipes from my old 3x5 cards into my online cookbook. The next step will be to back them up on angelfire or a CD or both -- and then to start the process of adding the full-size recipes from computer print-outs and magazine clippings. The fun part has been re-discovering old favorites. The best recipe that I've rediscovered so far is the steak diane with cognac and sherry that we enjoyed on Sunday. around 6 P.M. D. stopped by, and we had lunch at Cappita's. BF finally got his company car back, so we'll see how that goes.
