near my first hostel, i immediately noticed this 19th century building (or so i'm told) with its beautiful blue door and elaborate herbal and female angel with caduceus about to drink from the snake's cup of wisdom, almost a witchcraft or wise woman image, dontcha think?
i very much liked these fine morning glory tiles installed at the museum of the roman theater, being excavated in alfama, lisbon, well the theater is being excavated, not the tiles, but you knew that
green interlocked knotted tiles, alfama, lisbon
brown tiles, baixa alto, lisbon
seen in chiado, the use of tiles on everything that can't move fast enough to get out of the way is attributed to muslim influence, but i had the wrong idea, i thought they were supposed to be non-representational, which turned out not to necessarily be the case, i don't know how old these are or if they are old at all, but i saw representational muslim tiles in the palaces where we were not allowed to photograph, so i thought i'd throw that fun fact in there, seemed they had everything from true escher cubes to little doves flying around in the old muslim tiles
a very tiny part of a very long and large blue and white mosaic near the st. lucia overlook
yeah, so here's another very small part of it, i think they must have reproduced every house and boat in lisbon at the time on the scene
fleur de lis tiles, lisbon
near the train station at sintra
i think this was in a wall on the road to the quinta, sorry about the blur, the sun was setting in the mountains at the time
portion of a very long hall of mosaics in the cloisters at belem
portion of a modern mosaic at oriente station
the deal is that all of the sidewalks and public plazas are cobblestones made of these black, gray, and whitey-beige mosaics, supposedly pounded into the streets by hand by prisoners, although i don't know if that part is an urban legend or not
also i'm thinking this fleur de lis mosaic was found on the sidewalk near the top part of the bica funicular
i'm mentioned them before but it wouldn't be fair to leave off a mention of the magnificent mosaics in the historic ribeira market near cais do sodre
