oahu bird list, january 2007
2007-01-16 - 2:08 p.m.
Here's my bird list from my recent trip to Oahu. Life birds are italicized.
Right now I'm counting 12, but
I might have one or two more coming, once I get a definitive answer on whether or not the
Koloa and Red/Feral Junglefowl I saw are considered full countable species. I don't
count down to subspecies, but it's worth noting that I did see the two endangered subspecies,
Hawaiian Gallinule, a subspecies of Common Moorhen, and Hawaiian Black-Necked Stilt, a
subspecies of...well, you figure it out.
Some interesting non-countables would include the show put on by the feral Moluccan Cockatoos,
Goffin Cockatoo, and male Electus Parrot roaming the grounds of Lyon Arboretum.
An interesting note about the Feral Pigeons, Rock Doves, or whatever you like to call them:
Many in the Oahu area are clearly either white wedding homing pigeons who decided not to
return home after being released for a wedding or else their descendants. Don't assume
every white bird you see is a tern. Look and see. A glimpse out of the corner of the eye is not enough since
they are often found in the same area, such as Kapiolani Park. A good look tells the tale,
since the Terns have the big melting dark eyes and are much more graceful in their shape.
