By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

A bibliography of my published books and stories.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

in search of peachfronts: on time but over budget

Dopped another batch of small cabs, again using the golf tee plus superglue method. Someone said to put a small piece of tissue between the golf tee and the stone. I don't understand why it would work but, just in case it does, I have tried it for a few items.

Found another piece of Green Moss Agate from India, which belonged on page 21, of the online mineral museum:

I dreamed about Bald Eagles last night. Maybe I will have a chance to head out and see the babies in the nest before they take off. How did the winter get away so fast?

Spent hours doing our taxes and still haven't quite finished, although I chased the cheese through the maze far enough to see that we're getting a very nice refund. I must say, though, that people who just have jobs get the last laugh when it comes to tax form hunting down and filling out, sigh...There was actually a year, one year, when DH could file the 1040EZ online. Then he wrote a book. As for me, I think I last filed an 1040EZ when I was 23 or 24. Yikes.

I have received a new proposal for the great Bolivian peachfronted conure/parrot adventure. Hyacinth Macaws, anyone? Wheee...the costs have kinda of ballooned out of control, what with the proposed renting of small aircraft and whatnot, but we hardly spent a nickle on travel last year, so I'm inclined to do it anyway. Plus if I just buy the flights to/from Bolivia, they're really cheap in April, so I'm inclined to pay with money there instead of miles and accumulate the mileage for a more expensive flight.

I suppose to anyone skimming my diary, they're lifting their eyebrows a bit, on that claim of how cheap we traveled last year, since we obviously traveled quite a lot, so here's a quick re-cap:

  • Costa Rica plastic surgery trip in February -- bought air ticket with miles, cost of surgery/recovery hotel probably shouldn't be counted in a travel budget but it was way cheaper (and better) than getting it done in the United States, also, as a result, I don't have to get Botox quite as often -- although I still have to get it
  • Washington/British Columbia -- two more award air tickets for me and DH, I'm thinking a couple of free hotel rooms as well, the only really harsh expense was the rental car insurance, but we got our money's worth out of the driving with all the amazing views we found
  • Sydney -- couldn't really afford to stay home for the price of the airfare, bulked up my miles, stayed in hostels and just generally got some unusual Australian birds for the super-cheap price
  • Northern Alabama/eastern Tennessee -- driving trip, had a free hotel room, also a few days free stay at my Dad's house, plus it was my birthday so I was wined and dined

I guess I'm going to blow out some of the savings this year, but oh well. I won't make a habit of it.
