part 6 of our point pelee, ontario trip report: pelee island

Today we took the ferry to Pelee Island and enjoyed a glass of wine in the southernmost tavern in Canada. Heh. Actually, while we did enjoy the frosty glass of wine, most of the trip was spent strolling to, through, and back from Fishpoint, sort of Pelee Island's "tip," in search of birds. It was tough going though -- another glorious sunny day with no reason to bring the birds down when they can just keep on traveling. We did get some cute sightings, though, including:

  • Fire at the dump, with two ambulances and the town firetruck hosing down the small but rather aromatic fire, resulting in the closure of the dump, disappointing a truck loaded with car-crushed trucks that ultimately had to turn around and take the ferry back to the mainland without dropping off its load of wreckage
  • Nashville Warbler bathing
  • Male Rusty Blackbird drying off while female Rusty Blackbird continued to enjoy a full bath
  • Two Northern Flickers claw-fighting in the forest

  • A tree that held one each of Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-Rump, and Black-Throated Green Warbler
  • Another muskrat, some large frogs, a large grayish snake with a pattern in it (maybe a Nerodia species?)
  • Evidence of raptors -- nothing left of a Red-Winged Blackbird except his wings!

New birds added today:

  1. Herring Gull
  2. Common Yellowthroat
  3. Carolina Wren -- off the "heard only" list now that we've seen it
  4. Least Sandpiper
  5. Eastern Kingbird
  6. Rusty Blackbird
  7. House Finch

difficult to capture the subtle colors of pelee island (yellow-green and pinky-orange trees just leafing out, subtle pink trilliums among the white) versus the garish stuff like rampant dandelions or the bright blue of the lake on a sunny day

I'm sure I'm leaving something off, but I'll try to add a list of all the bird species seen at Pelee Island today, unfortunately, in no real particular order:

  1. Herring Gull -- there were other gulls, I simply didn't bother to study them
  2. Red-Tailed Hawk
  3. Turkey Vulture
  4. Least Sandpiper -- actually in the march, not on the beach
  5. Killdeer
  6. Barn Swallow
  7. Tree Swallow
