wood stork flashback 2003-08-01 - 7:33 a.m. The roofers actually showed up around 6:30 A.M. and are even doing some work as I speak. The new cookbook diary archives won't update, so I may end up sticking with Angelfire after all, as the diary wouldn't be much use without the archives to serve as a table of contents. Last year on this date, at this time, I was at South Farm with D. where we saw an estimated 800 Wood Storks decorating the cypress trees like Christmas ornaments. Huge numbers of Northern Rough-Winged Swallows were also staging there on the telephone wires near the entrance. We could hear Barred Owls and lots of angry crows. At one point, dozens if not hundreds of storks flushed, flying low right over our heads. around 8:45 A. M. Around 8 o'clock, the roofers vanished again. I finally went outside to see WTF was going on and discovered that they have created a huge hole over BF's office and then gone off and left it untarped. OK, I just checked inside his office, and there is now a hole inside his office. Not a big hole. But a hole. around 10 A.M. The roofers are back. I had called the contractor to express my concerns, and there was a game of telegraph with guys calling other guys which ended up in a top guy hearing from the Latino guys that a man had fallen through the roof into the house! I learned about the telegraph game when the Latino foreman asked me to tell the top guy on the phone what had happened. I assured him that no one had come falling through the ceiling.
