By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

butter flies, people fly

2004-08-26 - 10:07 a.m.

A pair of Cloudless Sulphurs has been dancing for at least an hour this morning. A bad-tempered (aren't they all?) immature male RTHU chased a black swallowtail butterfly off the near feeder. I think it was a male Pipevine but it all happened too fast and I might have imagined that vivid blue flash.

I have been upgraded to First Class on my upcoming flight. It might seem funny, considering how often I fly, but I don't remember going First Class before. Perhaps because I'm petite, and I don't really need a big seat, it wouldn't have stuck in my mind if I was upgraded.

Even when I worked for an oil company and flew to Houston all the time, we had to take Southwest, and in those days they had two seat classes -- smoking and non-smoking. Good old Southwest. One Halloween a male flight attendant put on a Nixon mask and announced that we were being diverted to Cuba. Considering it was a full flight of oil company folks and rowdy Texans going to a Saints game, I'm still amazed that someone didn't perforate the practical joker with a bullet or two, because you just know that some of those folks had smuggled their smaller firearms onto the plane.

But those were the days of three complimentary screwdrivers on a 45 minute flight, and perhaps we were all too tranquilized to react. I remember sitting there and thinking: Hmmm, I hope this is all a big joke because this puddle jumper doesn't have that much fuel.

later

Lots of hummingbirds today, including females. Lots of scuffles.

DH and I had dinner at Cappita's. I wore the op art dress and Kenneth Cole velour boots. I ordered the ruby red trout but they were out and I ended up with a grouper-like fish called wahoo. I might be guessing on the spelling of that name.
