tornado spun this pine tree around in our front yard and threw it down sometime in the mid 1990spin red oak tree smashes house, tropical storm bill, june 30, 2003There was a supercell tornado yesterday in Mississippi that spun off all sorts of monster tornadoes. I called DH last night to see how he was doing and he's OK but his story as heard on cell phone went something like this:
We were standing outside the shop [in Pike County, where pictures of the devastation later made the front page of cnn.com] and we heard the air raid siren go off. Then somehow DH and a different co-worker were in a company vehicle fleeing the storm cells with the cell phone assistance of co-worker's friend or relative at the weather service. They stopped at a gas station and were warned that the cell had caught up and should be in sight. Then they took off again. At some point, co-worker got a call that his brother (or brother's kid? cell phone conversations are the classic game of telegraph) was missing in Brandon and it looked like they would have to go back and join the search. The teachers and kids had gone into the storm cellar/gymnasium, so they were O.K. However, when they emerged, the brand new high school just built after the old one was wiped out in the tornadoes of a couple year's past was completely gone. Fortunately, the missing person was found, and everybody and his extended circle of friends and relatives seems to be alive and well. There's the classic widespread property damage though. The Mississippi state governor has already declared a state of emergency. We'll see if the feds give a good goddamn. It used to be that you could take it for granted with this amount of devastation that it would be a federal emergency. No more. We were screwed on Tropical Storm Bill, and Texas got screwed on Claudette. I hope they get the help they need. DH has heard rumors that at least one other school was completely destroyed. After a big storm like this in April -- oh yeah, don't kid yourself, we got weather too, although nothing like theirs -- the thing to do is hop up early and look for the fall-out. I can't believe I didn't even think of doing so. I was too relieved that DH and company were still alive. On a more cheerful note, I have all of my hotel rooms confirmed for Nagoya and Kyoto now. I'm still mad about the field guide situation though. Hummingbird Report: Male and female RTHU, steady stream of visitors.
