2003-03-11 - 6:06 p.m. The editor has a meeting tomorrow to see if they will publish BF's novel. It is a literary house, rather than an SF house, so who knows if they will decide if it fits into their catalog. Still keeping the old fingers crossed. I did my taxes today, and the shenanigans at ATT last year did not make filling out Schedule D an easy job. ATT actually sent out a letter that I'm supposed to sign and include with my taxes explaining the whole mess. If they ever put Bernie Ebbers on trial (ha!), then I hope the judge will not consider the death penalty too cruel and unusual. If not for all his lies and stealing at WorldCom, ATT would never have been fooled into thinking WorldCom was making a profit, and they would have never broken up the company in the futile attempt to catch up. I don't really believe in the death penalty for stealing hundreds of millions of dollars. I would be satisfied if Ebbers was sentenced to life in a small damp box, with confiscation of all his ill-gotten assets, to be returned to the shareholders and let's not forget the shareholders of the competing telecom company who also got screwed. I bet I will be re-reading my diary years or even decades from now, and I will sit up and realize that Ebbers has still never been arrested. Steal a little, and they put you in jail. Steal a lot, and they make you king. Hell, I've waited 20 years for David Duke's conviction -- and they still haven't put him in jail, even though he is a known flight risk. Can you imagine what would happen to a black man who cheated on his taxes for two decades, as he stole hundreds of thousands (possibly more) of campaign contributions for his gambling addiction? They are supposed to lock Duke up soon, but I'll believe it when I see it.
