getting over west nile virus 2002-10-13 - 9:04 p.m. So I was told under the table that if you're under 50 and in reasonably good health, go ahead and get exposed to West Nile and get your immunity up. Well, nothing easier for a birder than to get bit by a mosquito in St. Tammany Parish. In early September, I felt ill and lost all strength in my left arm and thought I had carpal tunnel syndrome from too much internet or something. I couldn't even hold up a paperback book. But then it went away and they said on the news that it had been discovered that West Nile Fever can cause numbness or paralysis. So now I think I can assume that I've had it and I'm immune. Years ago, when I was in high school, there was a major outbreak of St. Louis encephalitis, the New World equivalent of West Nile Virus. My neighbor, who was only 17, died over Christmas vacation.
