alberta bird list

Here's the Bird List from my Alberta trip. I hate to say it, but while Alberta may be
protected from hurricanes by the mountains, we beat the crap out of them for birds.
I still managed to find three lifers, including the famous Clark's Nutcracker who was
studied by animal intelligence researchers, but we were stiffed by the grouse and
the ptarmigan, and it was truly noticeable just how few birds they actually have, other
than American Robins. Random thoughts:
I'm pretty sure we heard Hermit Thrush as well as Veery, but a Veery is the one who
sat very close and gave us a good long look on the path to the Valley of the Five Lakes. All
of the Yellow-Rumped Warblers that I inspected well enough to see were Myrtles, every durn one.
And the Ferruginous Hawks were not seen in the park, but rather when driving out
of Calgary toward the Canmore area. I saw a light morph being mobbed by an
angry corvid which struck the raptor hard several times, and I saw a dark morph
fly almost right over the passenger side of the car. Unfortunately, because of the
traffic issues in that area, I'm pretty sure that DH missed both of these birds, and
also most or all of the roadside Red-Tailed Hawks.
He did get to enjoy the female Merlin primping and preening near the
Icefields Parkway, as well as the good-looking pair of Bald Eagles that
rule majestically over the Vermillion Lakes in Banff.
