no expense will be spared in pampering ferns

2003-02-22 - 1:02 p.m.

I am officially mystified by the neighbor with the bright shiny new-looking red pick-up truck with the bed so stuffed to the brim with huge, beautiful potted ferns of various species that he can't put his tailgate up. When it's going to freeze, he drives the pick-up into the garage. When it's nicer weather, he backs it out into the driveway a few feet.

This has been going on all winter and is, in fact, still going on today with the truck parked in the garage to get the ferns out of the wind but with the garage door open because the temperature is decent.

It's wonderful that a person would be so attentive to the ferns under his care. But isn't there a cheaper way to achieve this -- say, put the ferns in wheeled pots or something? Sure, those wheeled pots are pretty pricey down at Tuesday Morning, say $29.99 a pop or something like that. But what the heck does a late model pick-up truck cost? It can't be less than $8,000.

We did a whirlwind of birding today, and I do mean a whirlwind. At one point, on the boardwalk over the marsh at Fontainebleau State Park, I was almost blown off my feet. Seeing was rather poor, with many birds getting away simply because I couldn't get the glass on them in time because of all the wind. But we managed to put together a short list.

Note: Birds marked RS were seen roadside only. Birds marked NC for Nature Center were seen on the boardwalk trail there. Birds marked BY were seen in my backyard. Others were seen at Fontainebleau.

Notables: Ruby-Throated Hummer and Orange-Crowned Warbler remain in my backyard. We saw a blue phase Little Blue Heron at the Nature Center and a younger white phase Little Blue at Fontainebleau. There was also a nice little alligator taking the sun at the Nature Center, in addition to a number of wild violets. We might not have seen many migrants, but spring is on its way.

Time was from 8:30 AM to 12:30 AM with breaks for the Farmer's Market, cooking and eating lunch, etc.
