an open letter to governor foster

2003-08-05 - 8:36 a.m.

Dear Governor Foster:

I am writing to encourage you to expedite the new drainage plan for western St. Tammany Parish.

In less than 30 days, I experienced two severe flood-related incidents, caused or aggravated by the lack of drainage in my area, the Woodridge North subdivision across from Beau Chene. On June 30, the flood waters disturbed the roots of a huge oak tree and caused it to crash into my home, causing over $30,000 worth of damages. On July 20, our car, purchased new in November, was totalled by the rising flood waters. Neither event had to happen; my area is Flood Zone C (low risk of flooding) and had never previously flooded like this. Over-development of the area, without any outlay for drainage, has destroyed the quality of life for me and many of my neighbors in Woodridge, Deer Run, Beau Chene, and Beau Rivage.

Last night, Parish President Kevin Davis and the parish engineer presented the plan they have developed for correcting the drainage in my area, called "study area number 1" in the plan. I would please urge you to release the funds to put their findings into operation as soon as possible. What if a hurricane were to impact our area before the proper drainage was to be implemented? The ultimate cost to the parish, and to the state, not to mention the individual loss of property and possible loss of life, could be devastating in these times when the federal government is refusing to allocate sufficient funds for the federal disaster program.

The oak tree that fell on my home weighed an estimated 20,000 pounds and had to be removed with a 15 ton crane. It could have very easily killed one of us where we stood in our home. This time we were lucky. We need to take action so that, next time, we won't have to rely on luck.

Thank you for listening.

Note: I sent a copy of this letter to the governor's office this morning. Now I can't remember ever getting a reply to any of my letters from Mr. Foster. But no one can say I didn't try.

a short while later

I also sent copies of the letter to the parish president and the district councilwoman, including a short note thanking them for making "area study 1" a priority. We'll see what happens.

Hummingbird Report: Two hummingbirds were chasing at around 3:30 P.M. when I went in the backyard to check on the parrots.

Woo hoo. BF found the gold bracelet he lost last week. It was sitting on the spare desk at work under some papers.
