Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

fountainebleau state park, our first visit since katrina

2007-04-01 - 10:44 a.m.

DH and I took a short bird walk this morning at Fountainebleau State Park. It's the first time we've been back to the old stomping grounds since Katrina. The damage is considerable -- sawed-off stumps everywhere, trees visibly missing everywhere, the old sugar mill blocked off, the entire lakefront blocked off. And, of course, as you can see from the picture above, there is only a couple, three yards left of the old marsh boardwalk. So we couldn't really get into the marsh or anywhere near the lake to bird.

I probably heard Red-Headed Woodpecker, Wood Thrush, and Northern Parula, but I haven't been studying my bird tapes lately, and I don't feel like doing a "heard only" list for those birds. Actually, I'm pretty sure I caught a teeny tiny glimpse of the thrush, but again it just wasn't enough, so I'm not counting it.

Best bird of the day was the Pileated Woodpecker who hung out for a long time exploring very low portions of trees in the parking lot. He even got down on the ground and hammered enthusiastically at the roots of the trees. We had great views, but while he didn't mind binoculars, he seemed camera shy and took off just out of range each time I raised the camera. Maybe he'd encountered cameras before and was afraid of being flashed?

We followed the sound of a mewing Gray Catbird until we found him in the brambles, we enjoyed the sight of a handsome Wood Duck pair perched on some bare branches, and we located a male Downy Woodpecker that was bashful at first but once we'd identified him then he gave up and showed himself well. We could hear Red-Bellied Woodpeckers just everywhere, and I had a good look at a hard-working male widening a nesthole. Here's the list:

  1. Great Egret
  2. Wood Duck
  3. Killdeer
  4. Mourning Dove
  5. Red-bellied Woodpecker
  6. Downy Woodpecker
  7. Pileated Woodpecker
  8. Eastern Kingbird
  9. Gray Catbird
  10. Northern Mockingbird
  11. Carolina Chickadee
  12. Tufted Titmouse
  13. Blue Jay
  14. Fish Crow
  15. European Starling
  16. Yellow-rumped Warbler
  17. Savannah Sparrow
  18. White-throated Sparrow
  19. Northern Cardinal
  20. Red-winged Blackbird
