By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

disturbingly lumpy brown thrashers

2003-08-03 - 4:46 p.m.

This morning's yard visitors included a large family of fledgling Northern Mockingbirds, at least four spotty-chested babies going up on their toes and practicing flashing their white wing bars. Other visitors were female Northern Cardinal, Mourning Dove, a pair of Carolina Wrens, and at least two defective Brown Thrashers.

The Brown Thrashers worry me. One bird was only a little scraggly, with perhaps a slightly shortened tail and a strange black patch on the right side. The other bird was significantly stunted, with its left eye hugely swollen and a series of hard-looking round tumors under its right eye. It could fly, hop, and eat, but it was nervous and followed the bigger bird as closely as it could. I don't know what to think. Is it House Finch conjunctivitis? Just in case, I'll stop putting out bird seed for a while. But, honestly, I don't have a great many House Finches. And I keep thinking of a squirrel that used to visit that also had huge bare tumors on its face.

We went over to J.'s for a delicious marinated shrimp lunch. As usual, I ate too much. BF fixed the rabbit ears on her TV but she had the wrong part for her computer, so he couldn't fix that. Nonetheless, she gave us a Japanese plum tree and a couple of other plants to help us get our garden back on track.

later

I'm thinking that the Brown Thrasher may have been infected with avian pox, which is a mosquito-borne illness. I was looking at some of the pictures, and that's what it looks like. My birds should be perfectly safe under their mosquito netting, but I still worry.
