mirage letter suite 1998 2006-03-28 - 8:47 a.m. PLease note: As of 2017, I've misplaced these photos again... I've finally found the photographs from our first comp to the Mirage letter suites -- you know, the ones where Michael Jackson was reported to be living courtesy of his good friend Steve Wynn when he was hiding out from the first round of extortionists, the early 1990s ones who didn't actually get him arrested. So we stayed there years later, oh maybe late 1998 or early 1999. I was in my anti-photography phase at that time and didn't carry my camera around. However, for some reason the Tropicana gave me a small 35mm camera, so I took a few pictures. They didn't come out terrifically well, and these days I've stayed in tons of comped suites bigger than my house, but I'll post a couple of pictures for old time's sake. In the picture above that's me in the limo, not the gloved one, although the over-exposure from the flash and the pink lipstick might make it a bit confusing. Below, I'm pretending to use the phone in the living room of the suite. Don't ask me why. D. thought it would make a better picture if I were yakking on the phone. The other day I mentioned that Grand Gulfport was one of the two casinos where I just couldn't seem to lose. Mirage was the other. Most of the time, you go back and forth, and at the end of the day -- well, at the end of 100 or 200 hours or so anyway -- you can expect to win an average of one big bet an hour or so. But at the Mirage I just had these huge, huge wins and really didn't seem to book any significant losses. Those were the days, indeed! Postscript: Unlike Dick Cheney, I do not require the hotel to inform my staff in advance if they want to put a big old gift basket in my room.
