orange lilies, white lilies

2003-05-04 - 6:10 p.m.

We woke up to discover that two of our Halloween lilies had opened.

Does it mean that these lilies will bloom all summer and on through October? Or does it mean that they will bloom twice a year, late spring and late fall? Either way, I will be delighted with a plant originally bought to decorate the table at Halloween.

The alarm didn't go off on time, so it was already muggy and buggy when BF and I arrived at Big Branch some time after 7 A.M. We were too late to catch the Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, but we did observe three other species of woodpeckers and a nuthatch pounding away to boot. Notable: A male Red-Winged Blackbird strutting daintily through the white waterlilies.

hundreds like this

Note: Italicized birds were seen roadside on the drive to Big Branch.

And here's the list:

  1. Great Egret
  2. Snowy Egret
  3. Wood Duck
  4. Rock Dove
  5. Mourning Dove
  6. Red-Headed Woodpecker
  7. Red-Bellied Woodpecker -- and lots of them!
  8. Northern "Yellow-Shafted" Flicker
  9. Eastern Kingbird
  10. Red-Eyed Vireo -- heard only
  11. Blue Jay
  12. American Crow
  13. Carolina Chickadee
  14. Brown-Headed Nuthatch
  15. Northern Mockingbird
  16. European Starling
  17. Eastern Towhee
  18. Northern Cardinal
  19. Red-Winged Blackbird
  20. Common Grackle

Telephoto test: Here's a picture of the Nuthatch taken from about 100 feet away, while he was pounding away on the pine tree.

And here's the Northern Flicker nest that we discovered, although the Flickers skedaddled too fast to be photographed, with the male flying around the territory and the female zipping back into the hole.

Later we went over to J.'s so that BF could fix her computer. It took hours to track down the problem but it seems to be fixed now. Whew! The geese milled around and checked out the car and peeped into the house to see what we were doing. I dug up a few of the orange iris from the woods in back of her house and planted them in the front garden. They needed to be divided to give them a chance to bloom.
