persimmon

2006-11-03 - 6:59 p.m.

A freecycle lady left me a note this morning that I could come by between noon and 1 PM to pick some persimmons off her tree. She had 9 other people on the list, so she was asking everyone to be considerate and just take a reasonable amount. I showed up at high noon and, since no one else was there, I'm afraid I walked around the whole tree and then picked all of the persimmons that were ripe yet low enough to be picked without a ladder.

Most of the persimmons were not actually ripe, I'm talking most as in 95 percent weren't ripe, not "most" as in 51%. So after I got all of the ripe ones, I still had room in my small basket to pick a few that weren't ripe. As I was topping off, the family drove up, giving me the opportunity to thank them for the treat.

Their license plate said "Oregon" and I quickly figured out that they had never seen a persimmon tree before and did not have a clue. The lady pretty much just shook her head, but the husband quizzed me carefully about how such things can be eaten. Since they are not from the south, in my heart I can't help but doubt their ability to consume the persimmon, but I followed up with a "thank you" email and a few words of advice -- which boils down to don't try to eat the persimmon until it is soft and liquid inside.

I got home and cherry-picked the very softest, mooshiest, most rotten-looking of the persimmons. I ate it. It was messy but it was perfection. So I ate another one. Wonderbar.

Because I'm hitting the road, I put the rest of the ripe-to-perfection persimmons in the freezer for another time. As for the not-yet-ripe, I figure I'll take them along on the trip -- along with a large package of baby wipes.
