Here is a specimen that we purchased at the Harrison County, Mississippi,
gem and mineral show, sometime in the early 1990s, from a man with a truck from
Alabama, that contained
nothing but a huge load of this material, some of it log-sized, some of it
smaller specimens like this. He didn't reveal the exact location, and I have since
learned that there may be several localities in Alabama that offer this
dark Petrified Wood with small sparkly Smoky Quartz crystals growing all
over it. It's a bit crumbly, so I like it as a mineral collector's piece,
rather than something I'd cut up, but it's possible that some people
could get some druzy Smoky Quartz pendant-size cabochons out of it. Me, I'll
enjoy mine just as it is.
