wondering who would win a match-up between eastern bluebird and black-chested buzzard-eagle

2011-04-10 - 8:26 a.m.

Judging from the alternately sneaky and bellicose behavior around the house, we've got at least three nests going -- Northern Cardinal, Eastern Bluebird, Northern Mockingbird. Probably the Carolina Wrens as well, although the Wrens haven't done anything to make themselves obnoxious. They sing a little, sneak around a lot, and only once did I catch a Wren yanking Courtney's chain by eyeing him boldly through the screen.

Cute scene yesterday: A magnificent adult Red-Tailed Hawk circled slowly and sinisterly over the yard, hesitating a time or two, in that way that makes you think they're about to descend. Instead, with some abruptness, the male Eastern Bluebird appeared from nowhere and flew up, landing on the old antenna, with his eyes seemingly fixed upon the Hawk. Not a word was exchanged, but the body language was there. The threat was there. No way could a nice, quiet, minding-his-own-business-at-the-grocery-store Red-Tail Hawk hope for any peace in the valley. If he intended to keep up the hunt, this Eastern Bluebird was going to gather a mob, with torches and pitchforks, or he might just be the mob, because you know that he was bold enough to do it. One look, and the slow circles were over. The Hawk made a bee-line for the distance.

Not that a Bluebird can do anything except pester a Hawk, but a Hawk can't catch a nice lunch when he's being pestered, either.
