By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

A bibliography of my published books and stories.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

A Sadean take on Asimov's classic Three Laws of Robotics can be found in Roger Williams' NOW REVIEWED ON SLASHDOT!!! The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect. Adult readers only please -- explicit sex and violence. For updates on the "Dead Tree Project" and other topics, you may visit the official fan site, Passages in the Void..

finally a new cage to replace the one destroyed by tropical storm bill

2003-10-04 - 12:59 p.m.

In a few moment's time, I watched a female/immature Ruby-Throated Hummingbird visit the feeder twice. A little ways in the distance, two Cloudless Sulphurs danced. A Common Buckeye moves from mistflower to mistflower, pumping its wings slowly to keep its eyes in motion. A Long-Tailed Skipper and various unknown skipper species also sample the mistflowers. Oh, and a Gulf Fritillary just skimmed by to say, "Me too."

BF has finished the new cage, and I just placed Sheldon in it alone so that he can explore and establish a certain amount of authority before I add Timmy. I wouldn't want him to get feather-plucked again, but the way they gaze longingly at each other and try to press up against each other through their cage bars makes me believe that they do want to be together. It might have been my imagination, but Sheldon's eyes seemed to dance for joy when I released him into the new cage.

a bit later

Painted Lady just stopped by.

video note

I knew he wouldn't go for the Oprah moments, but I was a little surprised at how much the BF disliked the video I rented the other night, Good Will Hunting, the story of a very high functioning autistic whose superpowers are a photographic memory and an ability to easily solve higher math problems.

back out before it's too late

Will has pretty much the full range of social deficits that you might expect from such a person, although he isn't quite in, say, Bobby Fischer's league. But he is a violent, defensive, fairly unpleasant individual who doesn't want to leave himself open to any further pain after a lifetime of abuse and conflicts with authority. So he refuses to do any useful work in math, keeping his gifts for his own amusement such as winning the smart girl and bullying creeps in bars. He makes a point of screwing with his would-be therapists' heads before they can start screwing with his. He has to constantly one-up the other guy, pretty much crushing (for instance) the very professor who has tried to help him. None of this seems especially unreal to me, but it left the BF shaking his head.

around 4 P.M.

Monarch Butterfly has joined the day's mistflower garden list. What a beauty. It's pumping its wings slowly as it sips, even as I type.
