2003-10-05 - 9:30 a.m. I thought I heard the zzzzzzt! of a Northern Parula this morning, but I didn't see the bird. I added Timmy to the new cage last night. He and Sheldon feinted at each other a few times, but they seem to be settling in nicely. I'm so glad to have them out of the rickety temporary cages. a sad note I was hoping to put off saying anything until I heard good news, but it doesn't look good. Roy of Siegfried and Roy was mauled by one of his tigers Friday night during a performance at the Mirage, and he is in critical condition. I know he loved his animals and was active in breeding and conserving them. Any time you work with wild animals there is a risk, but he gladly took the challenge to popularize their beauty and magic. A very great loss if he does not recover. The tiger is in quarantine. I hope they can find a way to safely manage the animal, if only as a breeding animal if no longer as a performer, because I feel Roy would want it that way. looking back Two years ago today, photo editor Bob Stevens died of the anthrax mailed to his office building, the first of five people to be murdered by the anthrax mailer. The probable killer has never been arrested or brought to trial for any crime, even for the easily proven ones like falsifying his background on multiple occasions in order to get access to classified materials like anthrax, Marburg, and Ebola viruses. Indeed, after the murders, they tried to spirit him away to the LSU bio-terrorism lab and buy his silence with a $150,000 year job -- even though his Ph.D. was invented. It really makes me think that he was acting on someone else's orders. Dr. Hugh-Jones, the world's leading anthrax expert by-the-by, stood by his guns and banned the jerk from his lab. But, you know, it really shouldn't take the top guy to stand up and say, "We don't allow folks with invented credentials in a damn bio-terrorism lab." Common sense, people. Hummingbird Report: I've got an almost perfectly round female/immature Ruby-Throat using the crimson climber and both feeders. I think I saw one other hummer, but otherwise traffic seems fairly light. Oops. As soon as I typed this, two hummingbirds came chasing by my window. Of course.
