selasphorus rufous/allen's alert
2003-12-29 - 9:10 a.m.
Winter Hummingbird Alert
I just got a tiny visitor to the near feeder -- noticeably smaller than a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, "dirty" chin, a short-tailed looking bird with a rufous rump and a wash of rufous along the sides. It's an immature female Selasphorus but whether it's Rufous or Allen's, I can't tell.
Now she's back at the rear feeder. It would be nice to have a winter hummer stick around for awhile. Yesterday we went to a small Christmas get-together at J's and ate until the food came out our ears. Mmmm mmmm good. It was a beautiful day, even a little warm for my Christmas sweater with gold and silver metallic threads. The geese were swimming on the pond all afternoon, the white ones glowing almost swanlike.
later
We've had a pretty severe thunderstorm, and the winter hummingbird has visited the feeders several times.
pugnacity
Oh my God. The winter hummingbird just chased the Northern Mockingbird off the suet feeder and the Mocker flew off before returning to feed. Is this proof that the species is the "pugnacious Rufous Hummingbird," as it's always referred to on the bird tours? I don't remember Allen's being quite as bad-tempered.
later
The bird has been perched for some time and is laughing at my attempts to pin down a conclusive species ID. Immature female Rufous/Allen's is as close as I can get.
