2009-01-18 - 10:55 a.m. I'm not sure that there's anything to be learned from this hand except that, when in doubt, if you have opponents who can't be blown off their hand by nuclear technology, maybe it's OK to check-raise more often than you would think. $2/4 Limit Hold 'Em. One opponent I've tagged as weak passive, another I'm not sure of. Overall not too aggressive, especially for the limit. I have QJ of diamonds in the small blind. UTG+1 open limps, fish calls, I complete, BB calls. 4 small bets in the pot. Flop comes AKT of diamonds. Wow. I've flopped a royal in a tiny pot. Now how do I get paid with this scary action-killing board? There are no big diamonds outstanding. Hell. I've got to check and hope somebody at least has an A. Big blind checks. UTG+1 bets. Aha. Fish calls, as we all knew he would, because that's what he does. May we hope that UTG+1 has an A and will continue to play on later streets? I call, although I would normally check-raise. But I don't feel like announcing then and there, hey, turkeys, I got the royal. My play may be bad, but there it is. That's what I did. The BB also calls. Turn is a harmless looking little 2 of spades. It gives no one anything to hope for, unless by a miracle someone is playing A2 (which I wouldn't put past the fish) but nor does it give any additional reason to fold. Nothing has changed except the bets are bigger now. I can't risk giving up another bet, not on the large street, so I donk out and pray. Oddly it's the BB who calls and the other two who fold. River is the 8 of diamonds. Well, ain't that freakin' special? How does my opponent call me without a diamond, and I've got all the remaining big diamonds? Still, I have to bet and hope that he hits the wrong key and pays me off anyway. Sure enough, he does with his AJ offsuit. Wow. I collect an 8 big bet pot with a flopped royal -- something I don't expect to see in my lifetime again playing limit hold 'em. And I'm left wondering if it would have been 9.5 big bets if I'd check-raised the flop or if they all would have dropped right then and there. I guess we'll never know. I think I ended up making an extra 0.5 bet because I got the turn and river calls but, who knows? Maybe this guy would have called me down all the way anyhow.
