I would like to say
Coyote is forever
Inside you

But it's not true.

The above quote is from The Call of the Wild, in Turtle Island, by Gary Snyder, which I bought the the other day, after reading Mark Bittner's The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.

By a strange chance, the next book I picked up with a parrot on the cover -- I suppose I pick up all I notice at the library -- was Elsewhere in the Land of Parrots by Jim Paul. It turned out not to be my kind of book, since it was pretty much a romance, although not quite formulaic enough for Harlequin, but I was bemused to discover that a thinly disguised -- OK, not very disguised at all -- Mark Bittner is a character in the story. Paul changes his name to Mike. And he changes all the parrots' names too. Bob Seger?

Is there a message in all these synchronicities? Perhaps. I'm still pondering.

Near the end of Elsewhere in the Land of Parrots, the romantic lead makes a bittersweet statement, not too different from the Snyder quote I've printed above:

"...it just seems like there are going to be only two kinds of wild animals now. Those in the most remote places, like that swamp out there, where people can't go -- regular people, I mean -- and those who can find a way to live among human beings, to exist through human culture."
