go, mockers

2003-06-25 - 12:44 a.m.

The Mockingbird fledglings are getting big, and some of them came out into the open today to beg for suet. A squirrel was down on the ground picking up crumbs, and a protective parent Mocker swooped down and hit him on the back with both feet. Hilarious.

I was rearranging the books the other day, and I found a copy of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. I've always been bemused by this quote:

"Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird....Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
Seems a bit unfair to the Blue Jays. They were given color instead of song, but I'm not sure why that should make shooting them more morally acceptable. Both species are hot-tempered territorial scrappers who will boldly defend their young, their nests, and their territory against much larger interlopers. If you're hit on the back of the head by a territorial bird while you're jogging, sure, it could have been a Blue Jay, but it is equally or more likely to be a Mockingbird. Actually, Atticus appears to be a bit weak on his environmental law, as it was quite illegal to shoot either Blue Jays or Mockers in 1960, just as it is today.

Hummingbird Report: I had a long look at a female adult R-T using both feeders and even checking the Echinacea flowers. There was a chase just now but I didn't get a good look at the second hummer.
