2005-09-15 - 9:54 a.m. Beep is sick. The birds were calling in distress, and I went down to find that poor Beep has a cold in one eye, similar to what Courtney had in early 2003. Unfortunately, I can't drive to the Bird Hospital from here, even if it's open yet, which seems doubtful. I checked her weight, and she is if anything overweight, so I separated her from Dale and put her in a quiet bird carrier where she can rest. I saw her drink some water, and now she is napping. All I can do now is hope for the best. Even if I still had the antibiotic, which I don't, it wouldn't be good after all of this time. Poor Dale is distressed and tried to open the door to the big cage after I removed Beep. I think he wants to come over and check on her. But I feel that quiet is the best hope now. In other news, they seem to be cleaning up St. Tammany Parish, Jefferson Parish, and even Orleans Parish much faster than anyone ever predicted. FEMA and the federal government may not be worth a damn, but the little people on the ground have surpassed all expectation. Despite my doubts, FEMA's website must have gotten some information out of me, because I got a letter yesterday saying that they couldn't figure out what we were entitled to yet, because they don't know what our insurance is going to cover. I'm not too surprised. Even our insurance company doesn't know, since we haven't yet been able to get an adjuster. Meanwhile the stack of receipts continues to ascend toward the ceiling. On Tuesday the first commercial flight, a Northwest flight from Memphis, landed at MSY. Despite this triumph, yesterday Northwest and Delta both declared bankruptcy. The disaster was too much on top of everything else -- the price-gouging of fuel and the necessity to cancel so many commercial flights over what would be a major travel holiday was no doubt the final blow. Well, some credit card company just called me on the phone to announce darkly that someone was using my sister's credit card in Australia. I assured them that she planned to be there for several weeks and the charges were undoubtedly hers. I hope I did the right thing. I was a bit off-guard because I don't know why they called here, but it didn't sound like someone trying to get in her business. They didn't try to get any numbers or mother's maiden names out of me or anything. So I think it will be OK.
