By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

A bibliography of my published books and stories.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

who ya calling a peewee

siding torn off house by katrina
2005 by Elaine Radford & Roger Williams
Over the weekend, we made quite a bit of progress on the house. In fact, we completely repainted the wall and door in the hallway where the central air-conditioning unit lives. We also painted the new panels for the new siding. Yes, the final caulking, spackle, touch-ups, and last coat of paint will have to take place after the new panels are already installed on the house, but the less work we have to do standing on a ladder, the better.

I woke up this morning and now realize that a small bird I saw yesterday but couldn't get my binoculars on because I was covered with paint was an Eastern Wood-Pewee. It was even saying, "peewee, peewee." I'm about 90 percent sure, but I'm not going to add it to the list because I don't add birds that are after-thoughts. That way lies madness. Besides, while I have Western Wood-Peewee on my life list, I don't have Eastern, and I'm not sure I want to put a look at the bird while I was busy doing something else (painting) as my life sighting of the bird!

It sure would have made a nice addition to the yard list though.

A bad day for New Orleans yesterday -- the Aints lost 52-3, which makes you feel like telling San Antonio to keep 'em. Three cops were videotaped by a news team beating up some old drunk in the French Quarter. One of the cops even tried to attack the AP producer who was getting it all on tape. Sigh. Two steps forward, one step back.

D. and M. visited their house yesterday. It's worse than I thought, with pieces of ceiling falling down. D. says the roof is tarped, so the damage should not get any worse, as long as he works quickly to remove the bad sheetrock and rotten refrigerators. He had just bought a new $1,400 fridge. Can you imagine? It makes you not want to buy anything new, at least in hurricane season.

later

The rumors are flying that the old drunk the cops beat up wasn't even drunk. He is 64 years old and supposedly has Parkinson's Disease.

Hummingbird Report: I have the same perfectly spheroid female Ruby-Throat at the back feeder that I had yesterday.Later: A little immature male just stopped by the near feeder.
