By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

A bibliography of my published books and stories.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

A Sadean take on Asimov's classic Three Laws of Robotics can be found in Roger Williams' NOW REVIEWED ON SLASHDOT!!! The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect. Adult readers only please -- explicit sex and violence. For updates on the "Dead Tree Project" and other topics, you may visit the official fan site, Passages in the Void..

April blunderstorms and good old Floppy

2003-04-08 - 10:45 a.m.

I woke up to a man on the radio saying that yesterday 6,000 houses in St. Tammany Parish lost power. I ran over, turned off the alarm, went back to sleep. The torrential thunderstorm continued apace. There was no sleeping late for the Chickadees though. When I did get up, I could see them going back and forth in all but the worst of the rain.

I didn't want to risk turning on the computer while the thunder and lightning was at its peak, so I got started on some spring cleaning. It never goes very fast, because it's more like an archeological expedition than the brutal earth-moving bulldozer operation that's really required. I stopped and pondered the following items encountered along the way:

  • Tax receipts from 1989. I think if the IRS hasn't questioned them by now, they've missed their chance.
  • An outline for a story by Roger about a far future race of beings descended from sheep, which I suppose puts them in a direct line of descent from H.L. Mencken's Americanus boobus.
  • A face only a mother could love:

This torn-up thing is the stuffed toy I had as a baby and then as a child pretty much up until the double digit ages. Hmmm. As a matter of fact, it is the stuffed toy I still have, since instead of tossing the pitiable beast, I placed him in safekeeping inside a cozy hatbox.

  • Some old diaries and an old novel (probably more novella length) that I wrote as a teen-ager. Maybe I'll read them later but not today because...
...I just found out that today is half price day on Ebay, so I suppose I'd better get off my duff and get some items listed. I hope this doesn't mean the end of the free listing days. There is a big difference between half price and free, especially in this economy when people are willing to pay a fraction of what they used to.

Let's just hope the lights stay on so I can stay on the computer for awhile.

a bit after 2 P.M.

It looks like the worst of the storm has passed. I was wrong about my White-Throated Sparrows migrating. There is at least one tan morph picking on the ground right now.

a short while later

A white morph and the tan morph are now out there together. The white morph's yellow spots are glowing.

around 4 P.M.

Female Indigo Bunting on the ground eating discarded finch seed. I want a male!

Hummingbird Report: A gorgeous adult male Ruby-Throated Hummingbird.
