lemurs gone wild 2007-11-27 - 4:00 p.m. We have returned from Berenty Nature Reserve, which is not a public park but a sisal plantation owned by a private concern. As a sideline from raising sisal and what looks awfully like agave (and yet there is no tequila?) then they run photo tours for very well equipped Japanese tourists and the odd birding tour. The staff hangs their cell phones from a spot just outside the restaurant where reception is good, and so we have learned that our Mada Serpent Eagle pair have successfully hatched one of the eggs after we left Masaolo. Birds as well as birders can be odd, and at Berenty we discovered a Black Kite, a migrant not ever known to nest on Madagascar, sitting with almost psychotic determination on a Cuckoo Hawk egg. Don't expect me to even begin to hint at a theory behind this on a EU keyboard. Nor will I vent here about Ring Tailed Lemurs climbing into my window at 5 AM, with a well_equipped Japanese lady photographer of a certain age hot on their heels behind them.
