an unexpected loss 2003-01-25 - 1:03 p.m. I received some sad news last night. One of the original core team members died suddenly. There were five of us, D. and his brother, me, L., and B. L. retired not long after I did and was working on building a house on his land. He wanted to take care of his brother, who has been dying for many years of a disease that affects his brain to the point where the brother himself told me, "I can have an Easter Egg hunt all by myself." But L. himself was in his fifties and seemed to be in great shape. It is not clear what happened, other than a vague diagnosis of "heart disease." The brother went to bed, while L. stayed up to watch TV. When the brother woke in the morning, he discovered that L. had passed. It is a shock. The first three members of the team were, of course, D., D.'s brother, and me. I remember thinking that it would be damned difficult to find good people who were honest enough to handle the cash and follow the rules of card-counting without supervision, yet still have the time and ability to travel around chasing good blackjack games.
