the number 23 and the shaggy dog

2007-09-19 - 11:04 a.m.

A storm is on the way. Could be a Cat 1 hitting New Orleans on Friday night. Could be a lot of things. These models aren't doing so well lately. Sigh.

IMOM and I watched The Number 23 the other night. Then DH and I watched it again to check on a few things. The first time I watched it, I kept muttering to the IMOM, "This guy better not have rabies or distemper. This better not be a hallucination." I especially noted that he received psychiatric counseling after being bitten by the Nasty Evil Dog, but not any medical treatment. Hmmm.

Well, he didn't have rabies, but the movie makers still didn't seem to know exactly what he did have, other than amnesia. The story fell completely apart in the end. Why would the wife move the bones if she thought her husband was innocent? If she thought he was guilty, why bring the book to his attention in the first place? I just don't understand why you would have major, gaping, god-awful plotholes in a movie with a budget so large. Of course, if it's a shaggy dog (he's dying of rabies), then fine, hallucinations have plotholes, dreams have plotholes. And at first they go down that road -- even the Christmas cake is a dog, the co-worker who sexually harasses him wants to do him in the "bitches' room," the psychiatrist collects dogs playing poker memorabilia...and there's the immortal N.E.D. himself. Hell, the first scene of the movie is a lady in red walking a, natch, shaggy dog.

So it becomes unsatisfying, because you're left with the impression that they didn't have the courage to carry through with what they started. Either have the courage of your convictions, or hire a damn writer to write a damn script. Plotting is the bones of story, folks.
