wood stork overhead

2007-09-18 - 4:38 p.m.

IMOM and I had a bright sunny day for the drive back. We saw three serious accidents -- two involving fires and/or explosions -- which is two more serious accidents than we saw during the durn hurricane. Of course considering the visibility we had during the hurricane...

The worst was a straight, lonely stretch of rural real estate in northern Mississippi, where both smallish vehicles were absolutely reduced to shells. I could tell because the fire had already been extinguished by the multiple fire trucks on the scene. It was hard to figure out how the accident could have even occurred -- much less how both cars could have exploded so violently. On reflection, I have to assume that maybe one of them was carrying some chemicals, maybe for an illegal meth lab? Because otherwise I'm incredibly stumped.

The second fire, not far from the Louisiana state line, involved three vehicles full of young, large men standing around and studying what looked to be, at that point, nothing larger than a human body on fire. The fire trucks and police had not yet arrived, but we didn't exactly feel inclined to hang around the scene. As we headed onward, we did see several emergency vehicles on the way. Again, what? Was it "let's transport lots of dangerous drug chemicals" day or something?

The last accident was exactly two miles from my house and involved a small vehicle, neatly on its side (the passenger side) in the ditch. Police and ambulance on the scene. Again, no obvious cause of the accident. Scary stuff.

Also, along the way, I spotted a single Wood Stork overhead. I couldn't make a Jabiru out of it no matter how I fantasized. But I'd better make sure that I've put Wood Stork on my Mississippi list.

Hummingbird Report: Yeah, there's a female/immature RTHU sitting on the telephone wire guarding the trumpetcreeper flowers.
