Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

one year of diaryland and counting

2003-10-15 - 4:45 p.m.

Another big day for numbers and varieties of butterflies on the mistflowers. Several skippers I couldn't identify, including an orange-ish species. A medium-sized black species with spots - not a large swallowtail or anything like that but an open-wing species of some sort.

My one year anniversary of starting my diary passed on Sunday, but I was too busy posting about my trip to comment on that fact. I like the back-up of having my bird lists and some travel photographs online, and it is very convenient to be able just to send URLs when people want photos or answers to questions about whatever. It has already proven helpful in keeping me from wearing the same outfits all the time when I go out to nice restaurants, and now I hope it will prove equally helpful in tracking the seasons and the progress of my garden. I also have the start of some decent hummingbird records for my yard.

Just rambling thoughts about the past year:

  • There was more excitement than I would have liked, with over $30,000 damage done to our house by the huge oak tree flung on our house by Tropical Storm Bill, quickly followed by the flooding of BF's car and the crashing of my car a short time later. House and both cars now seem to be in good repair, and it's all over except for some last-minute price-gouging by the contractor. Guys, it's called a signed contract. You have been paid in full according to the terms of that contract. Deal with it.
  • I only went to Vegas once, in late October 2002, instead of every six or eight weeks, which seems a little strange in retrospect, but I can't honestly say I miss it. I suppose I will eventually have to find some way to make more money sooner or later, or I will end up having to go back. Shudder. But it's hard to get motivated to make money when there is no place safe to invest it. We have enough for now, so why should I work my tail off just so it can get stolen by the likes of Lay and Ebbers? I guess there's always real estate as an investment, but it doesn't seem safe either when you have doubts about the stability of your governance. Well, enough said about that.
  • The BF's book was well-received online based on his fan mail and voluntary tips but the conventional publishers/agents seem to have wussed out. So we'll have to see how it goes with the Print on Demand publisher.
  • I learned enough HTML to get a couple of days work as a ha ha web writer, but EXCEL is still giving me fits. It's OK for tax records but I still can't figure out how to merge birding lists or even how to re-order them in EXCEL.
  • Our trip to Panama in June was a stand-out for numbers and species of birds, and I would love to return "in season." Of course, as I have been invited on the African trip, I will be doing that one first, in January. I would love to go one year to the River of Raptors in Veracruz and follow it down to Panama. But this wasn't the year -- a hurricane in Veracruz and the need for the dental tours to Tijuana were just two reasons why it would have been a bad idea this year.
  • The loss of the oak tree has completely changed the light in the backyard and greatly increased the possibilities for butterflies. Right now, I can hardly type for being distracted by two Monarchs who keep chasing and spiraling each other up and up and then coming back down.
  • It is tough to pick the best yard bird of the year but I'm going to vote for...the envelope please...Calliope Hummingbird.

Hummingbird Report: A brief flyby minutes ago, too fast to tell anything except that the bird was, indeed, a hummingbird species.
