Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

buzzed by white pelicans

2003-01-06 - 3:04 p.m.

This morning I set the alarm for 6 A.M. and unfortunately rolled over and slept another half an hour, just enough so that I had to drive into the rising sun as I headed off for Fontainebleau State Park, also known as the state park I never spell the same way twice. It was cold but sunny, with some nice birds. A highlight was when I heard a sound like the swish of heavy silk and looked up to see a flock of forty-odd White Pelicans flying low right over my head.

Here's my list. The three species in bold, italicized letters are the ones I added at the Northlake Nature Center trail. I also planned to walk on the Mandeville lakefront but changed my mind when I realized that they were in the process of moving an old plantation house off a barge in the lake onto the property across from Donz.

  1. Pied-Billed Grebe

  2. Brown Pelican

  3. White Pelican

  4. Double-Crested Cormorant

  5. Great Blue Heron

  6. Snow Goose

  7. Blue-Winged Teal

  8. Lesser Scaup

  9. Bufflehead

  10. Northern Harrier

  11. Red-Tailed Hawk

  12. American Coot

  13. Common Moorhen

  14. Killdeer

  15. Laughing Gull

  16. Forster's Tern

  17. Belted Kingfisher

  18. Red-Bellied Woodpecker

  19. Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker

  20. Downy Woodpecker

  21. Eastern Phoebe

  22. Tree Swallow

  23. American Crow

  24. Fish Crow

  25. Blue Jay

  26. Carolina Chickadee

  27. Tufted Titmouse

  28. Carolina Wren

  29. Ruby-Crowned Kinglet

  30. Eastern Bluebird

  31. American Robin

  32. Northern Mockingbird

  33. Yellow-Rumped Warbler

  34. Swamp Sparrow

  35. Red-Winged Blackbird

  36. Eastern Meadowlark

  37. American Goldfinch

Yes, I did notice that I didn't see any egrets or any Northern Cardinals. The water was too deep where I was checking for the egrets. I have no explanation for the goof-off Cardinals.

The Snow Goose was a lone bird standing on the beach. When I approached, the bird casually sauntered into the water and drifted away with an attitude of, "You didn't scare me. I felt like swimming anyway." Either Snow Goose season is over, or they know where there's no hunting allowed, or both, because I swear the bird looked me right in the eye without blinking. I can't remember when I've seen just one Snow Goose by itself, away from a flock. This bird had an extremely self-confident vibe, almost like a swan.
