Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

this might be the single most ridiculous hand of low stakes no limit poker ever played

2009-12-28 - 9:43 p.m.

Yeah, so I've been reading the "weak game" chapter again in Harrington, since Sunday afternoon I found myself in the weak game of weak games. But I'm not sure I played in any single hand live that was as ridiculous as the hand I just played today. Check it out.

$0.01/$0.02 No Limit Hold'em - 6 players -

The cast of characters and their stacks:

UTG: $1.98 -- new to game
MP: $1.00 -- new to game
CO: $0.79 -- new to game
BTN: $2.23 -- just joined table but has already tried to run it over by open-raising or taking a string of limpers as an invitation to raise every time, plus he's quick to go "all in"
SB: $1.32
Hero (BB): $1.36

MP posts a big blind -- this is just called a "post," not a big blind in a live game($0.02)

Pre Flop: ($0.05) Hero is BB with 6 ♠ 5 ♦
1 fold, MP checks, CO calls $0.02, BTN raises to $0.08, SB calls $0.07, Hero calls $0.06, MP calls $0.06, CO calls $0.06

I don't love my pre-flop hand but I'm partially invested and much more important, I have huge implied odds if I flop something nice, because the bully at the table has me covered, so I can expect to double up if I hit just right.

Flop: ($0.40) 8 ♥ 5 ♠ 6 ♥ (5 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $0.18, MP calls $0.18, CO calls $0.18, BTN raises to $0.50, SB folds, Hero raises to $1.28 all in, MP calls $0.74 all in, CO calls $0.53 all in, BTN calls $0.78

I have bottom two on a draw-heavy board. Again, I'm not in love with the hand, but I decide to play it fast and see what develops. If the aggression comes from the bullshit artist on the button, I'm going to go all-in. It all goes according to plan until WTF I get not one but two "all in" callers, with the button also calling. Three callers? Holy cow. I wouldn't give you a nickle for my bottom two pair hand right now.

Turn: ($4.59) 4 ♦ (4 players - 3 are all in)

River: ($4.59) ♠ (4 players - 3 are all in)

Final Pot: $4.59
MP shows 6 ♣ 4 ♥ (two pair, Sixes and Fours)
CO shows 8 ♠ T ♣ (a pair of Eights)
BTN shows J ♥ A ♠ (high card Ace)
Hero shows 6 ♠ 5 ♦ (two pair, Sixes and Fives)
Hero wins $0.67
Hero wins $0.63
Hero wins $3.09
(Rake: $0.20)

In other words, I win all the frigging money in all the frigging various and assorted pots. The man on the button actually called me down, after seeing two other callers go all in after me, with A high. What's he hoping for? Runner runner everybody's computer gets disconnected on three continents, and we're struck by lightning, and he falls out his chair and somehow wins? I don't even think that would work.

Shortly thereafter, with the wind taken out of the bully's sails, I played this less ridiculous hand.* 5 players.

BB: $1.98
UTG -- our bullying friend from the last hand $0.87
CO: $1.00
BTN: $1.24 -- another wanna be bully now running low on chips
Hero (SB): $4.39

CO posts a big blind -- ($0.02)

Pre Flop: ($0.05) Hero is SB with 9 ♠ A ♥
UTG raises to $0.12, 1 fold, BTN calls $0.12, Hero calls $0.11, 1 fold

Our UTG friend is always, always open-raising with ATC (any two cards), so while I won't necessarily defend my call here out of position, I will just point out that I'm the deep stack on the table now and I have a little bit of room to play with. Hope this isn't the "winner's tilt" I mentioned in a previous entry.

Flop: ($0.40) 9 ♥ 5 ♣ 7 ♥ (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets $0.18, BTN folds, Hero calls $0.18

The flop is OK for me, and even though I know UTG will bet as long as he holds initiative, I'm not in a terrible spot. I can just check and see if his bet blows away the button. When the button indeed departs, I smooth call with evil intentions for the turn.

Turn: ($0.76) 5 ♥ (2 players)
Hero bets $0.74, UTG folds

A perfect card for my semi-bluff to the nut flush. I'm happy to bet enough to put the guy all-in. He decides that he doesn't want to play anymore and goes away. Yay me. I guess now I'm the table bully.

Final Pot: $0.76
Hero mucks 9 ♠ A ♥
Hero wins $0.76

*Actually, I'm assured that my play of the second hand was awful, ridiculous, and just plain terrible in every way. Oopsy.
