By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

wind, wind, wind

2006-03-10 - 9:17 a.m.

Tornado watch yesterday afternoon. I was afraid to put out the garbage because the wind was so violent so I missed a pick-up opportunity to get a big load of junk moved out. Sigh.

D. has a new roof on his house. Finally.

Got the sniffles. Had to take an allergy pill yesterday for the first time in months. I'll probably have to go take another one in a minute for today.

People are starting to report their first Ruby-Throat Hummingbirds. Not me. I don't know if I really don't have any, or I don't see them because, with all the trees gone, there's too much light in my office and glare on the screen if I leave the curtains open.

Yesterday, a mixed group of Redwings and Cowbirds (including both males and females of both species) stopped by the bird table. Don't know when, if ever, I've seen Cowbirds that low in my yard. But, again, what choice do they have with the trees gone?

later

My attention was caught by the song of Red-Headed Woodpecker. I looked up, but the song had already changed. It was the Mockingbird on the corner of the roof. After a minute, tired of my staring, she flew to the nest and re-arranged a twig. The nest is the same place as last year, pretty much on top of the old one, in the white-flowering shrub next to the front door.
