evesham abbey photos
2004-06-12 - 12:56 p.m.
Note: You can read part one of my England trip by clicking
right here.
The bird list/photos are
here,
and the taxicab photos are
here.
Another note: My photos from the Evesham Abbey complex are larger than
usual and might be unpleasant to load over a dial-up modem. Sorry
about that.

The first church was consecrated at the Evesham Abbey complex in 1295,
but the current complex was erected starting in 1470. The Abbey was
the fifth richest in England, enjoying a beautiful setting on
the Avon River, and it actually included two churches, one for the
locals, one for pilgrims who might be carrying plague.
A parishioner
from one of the churches saw us drifting around with cameras under the
glorious blue sky, and he came up to tell us a little bit about the
site, including the sad fact that the monks who went between
the two churches to assist the people managed to spread the plague
anyway. He also warned us of two ghosts in the museum gift shop.
It was probably the power of suggestion, but indeed when I walked into the
shop, I was overcome by such an uncomfortable prickling sensation all
over that I immediately walked out again.
The Abbey is still an important part of the community. People were having
picnics, feeding the swans, and playing soccer. In one corner of the grounds,
a concert was being set up. An old fish pond had been converted into a
remote controlled boating area, and a hobbyist was operating a humongous
pet aircraft carrier. All this under the stone glare of a gargoyle or two.
