international hummingbird festival

2003-09-06 - 12 noon.

Yesterday afternoon BF got back from Jackson. I fixed some moderately spicy chicken tacos which I think came out very well. We tried to watch a DVD but the contractor came over unannounced to see if the job was finished. It isn't really. But, since the parrot porch guy is hopeless, it just makes more sense for BF to repair the mess and finish the job himself. Someone is supposed to come over today and handle some odds and ends but I am not especially holding my breath.

This morning I rolled out of bed at 5:30 A.M. and headed for the International Hummingbird Festival in Folsom at Mizzell's. The hummingbirds were out in spades, with dozens, if not hundreds, of hummers feeding and fighting. Mostly adult males and females were migrating through, according to the bander, but there were some immatures too, as well as a number of Sphinx ("hummingbird") Moths.

The buttterfly fest should be a good one if the weather holds, because there were already huge numbers of butterflies of various species present, including several showy Tiger Swallowtails and uncounted Gulf Coast Fritillaries.

There weren't any migrants other than the Ruby-Throat Hummingbirds themselves. There were some bright yellow warblers, probably Prothonotaries, but they were uncooperative and didn't allow me to get a good enough look to feel comfortable putting them on the list. The best bird of the day was a good close-up Swainson's Warbler.

Time: 6:45 A.M. to 10:30 A.M.

Conditions: Cooler than normal, clear

Species:

  1. Great Egret
  2. Little Blue Heron
  3. Ruby-Throated Hummingbird
  4. Red-Headed Woodpecker
  5. Blue Jay
  6. American Crow
  7. Carolina Chickadee
  8. Tufted Titmouse
  9. Carolina Wren
  10. Northern Mockingbird
  11. Brown Thrasher
  12. Swainson's Warbler
  13. Eastern Towhee
  14. Northern Cardinal
  15. Common Grackle
  16. House Finch

Hummingbird Report: BF says he saw several RTs while working in the yard. I've already seen one very nice adult male.
