By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

these bird books are way too heavy for mere mortals to heft

2009-10-13 - 3:47 p.m.

I can't wear the new shoes this trip. They rub too much on the back of my ankle. I had this happen with other shoes before, but I can't remember what I did about it. I think I just had to take a long time to break them in.

I also lost the nifty $7 alarm clock watch that I got at Wally World. I've looked high and low, and I can only conclude that I last saw it in Quebec, so it's probably still there. Maybe it's the one who keeps sending me the "Welcome to Yahoo: Canada!" screens. So I had to go out and pick up a new one. This one is pink and cost $12 but it (I hope) does exactly the same thing as the other one, without the part where it casually strolls off into the sunset.

On a more positive note, I noticed today that I received a $100 incentive in one of my checking accounts. I got it for signing up to use the free Bill Pay and paying two bills. They were both to private individuals and apparently went to those individuals as paper checks rather than electronic deposits. One of the guys held his check for quite some while -- in fact, he didn't deposit it until after the promotion was over. I guess it counts anyway, since I sent it before the deadline, he just didn't choose to cash it. Actually, I'm not sure that any real choice was involved, as it turned out that he was out of town when I mailed it.

So anyway, yay, an unexpected $100 is always nice.

I also got two codes, for free photo books from Shutterfly, for writing a couple of reviews for Trip Advisor. I wonder if they'll actually give me both books?

The other lady is definitely sharing rooms with me in Bolivia, so that's $450 or so saved right there. I wonder if anyone sells a pomegranate martini at MIA. I might just invest in one.
